Psalm 54,4
Psalm 54, 4
(Hinne! Elohim ozer li)
Behold!, God (is) Helper for me!
This verse hit my eyes in the morning, when I was reading this part. I think, for me, this part of whole psalm is the base for everything, what David was talking about and what he actually took as a “pillar” to resist the press around him and his comrades.
That time, he was actually on the run. Hidden outsider, runner, trying to survive in the mountains of Hachilah. His over four hundred comrades, company of people in distress, financial debt and press, and people of embittered spirit accompany him.
Then Ziphites betrayed them all to king Saul and let the Saul knew, where they exactly are, and where David is. They not only revealed, where David is, they actually offered their help to catch him. When David heard the story, he prayed this words to the Lord. Than he moved away. But even though David was well informed, that Saul is coming and it wouldn´t be the first time, when he would be running, he wasn't. He walked down to the desert of Moan, not far from Ziph with all his men. In my opinion I think it was a mistake. Why? In my suggestion, I woudn´t doubt, that local people of Ziph had very good knowledge of countryside where they were living and where David actually was. In the case, that they were strongly coorperating with Saul´s army, it wasn´t actually good reaction to walk just down to the desert of Moan. However it happened and David and his company got surounded. David tried to retreat, but it was to late. Facing to his surounding enemies, he saw that his decision wasn´t the best and there was no potencional escape for them to flee.
Now, what is amazing for me, by his prayer in this psalm, it seems to me, that he wasn´t worried or considered much about the fact, if he made mistake or not. Or how is possible, that he fell into this situation. Neither if he could choose another route to escape safely. No. Instead, that time, he wasn´t concetrating what was behind him, what he did wrong or good, he focused very clearly and simply what was before him. He set his God as the only possible way out of this trouble. He put his hand on the “pillar” of the truth in his mind: “Behold! (look here, right now!), My God is my Help!” Surounded by the Enemies he did amazing tactical move, he surendered! But different way, than Saul expected. In the place of fear, anxiety, pressure, sweaty faces, facing to death, David took his Golijah sword, pierced the earth benneth him, looked around his comrades and than he layed down and surendered everything, what he had. But not to the Saul and his army or to the pressure around, but to the living God Almighty. And He as He has always promised became his Helper again... (m)
